Late: 10% (-2, unless you have a good reason!)
Not an HTML (web page) document! -50%
No document submitted at all (just answers typed in). -4
Just using the correct extension in the name doesn't make the file a web page. Try viewing it yourself in a web browser and see what I mean. You need to use "tags" to format the text.
For this assignment you should have downloaded the assignment, and added your answers in the indicated places in the HTML source file. (You can ignore the tags this way.) Let me know if you want more help with this; you need to do this for most of the projects. -2
You only need one extension! (-0) This often happens when you have your computer set to "hide" the file extensions. You can fix that by opening any folder, Use the "tools" menu to select "folder options", click on the "view" tab, and un-check where it says "hide extensions for known file types". Then click the "apply to all folders" button.
I see you used "rich text" format (the default) with TextEdit. This converts the HTML to styles, then when you save it writes a new web page with its own styles. You should not do that; you need to get used to seeing the HTML "tags". Next time use the "Plain text" choice under the "format" menu. (-0)
You put your answers inside of greater-than and less-than symbols. This confuses a web browser, which will think those are "tags". You should just put in the answer in the proper place; no "tags" are needed! -1
Wrong format. This appears to be saved incorrectly, then edited. View your submission link above yourself to see what I mean. -1 You must follow the same steps as for the practice project we did during orientation.
================ISP===============
Forgot your name, -1.
Wrong encoding, -0 (Unicode or other unreadable encoding, -1).
Wrong filename, -0.
==============Search==============
Please save your work using the required file name.
Your "PHRASE" searches don't seem right (too many results), -1 each.
Your "AND" searches don't seem right (too many results), -1 each.
Your "AND" searches don't seem right (too few results), -1 each.
Your "OR" searches don't seem right (too few results), -1 each.
Your "OR" searches don't seem right (too few results). Notice how the numbers similar to the AND results? For Google at least, you need to use uppercase "OR", or it won't do an OR search. -2
Your Bing OR searches don't all seem correct (too few results). I believe with Bing you must use the vertical bar symbol for an OR search, even though the Microsoft help page says you can use either "|" or "OR".
Your "OR" search results are similar to your AND search results; they should be very different. -2
There turns out to be a problem with that crazy Bing search engine that Yahoo and AltaVista both use. (You did fine; I will need to change this project though.)
(-4-10) These results don't seem correct to me. Keep in mind that every page found with a PHRASE search will also be found with an AND search, and everything found with an AND search will be found with an OR search. So the results must have the most hits for OR, followed by AND, and the least hits by a PHRASE search.
For example, with Google, the results I got for digital cash were:
OR: 19,220,000,000
AND: 1,460,000,000
PHRASE: 1,010,000
I don't think you did the searches correctly. You need to read the help (sometimes called "tips" or "advanced") for each search engine, to figure out how to do these types of searches. A common mistake is to use the words "and" and "or", when you need to use "AND" and "OR".
Your Yahoo results seem wrong, -5. For example, for Yahoo OR, AND, and PHRASE searching for jalapeno beer, I got 13,000,000, 445,000, and 1,860,000.
You need to save as a different file "encoding". The default doesn't display correctly in web browsers. Try saving in "UTF-8" encoding instead. -1
Bad HTML, -1
No HTML, -5
You didn't record any results for the Google search, -6.
You didn't put your answers in the correct places; you put them inside the "comment" tags so they didn't show up when you view the page. -1 They need to go inside the table data ("TD") tags (that is, somewhere after the
tag and before the | tag.) It can go before or after the comment tag I put there, but not inside that tag.
You didn't save the file correctly. It was saved as an email. -3
You need to follow the same steps as for the practice project, and as shown during orientation.

Any one question (of the 16): 1 point each. (First error -0.)
Well done!
For I.1, would you really trust that talent agency? Did you check around to see what others are saying about them, especially the Better Business Bureau? (Remember, you always need to check what a website tells you, rather than just believing everything you read!)
For I.2, you put the name of a website, not a URL directly to a recipe.
For II.3, I got: No. (But there are such on-line books elsewhere ~78, e.g., "Scuba Diving Explained".)
For II.5, that's not a Dewey Decimal" number. (Use you awesome new Internet skills and look up "Dewey Decimal".) I got: 320.5/4.
For II.5, I got: 320.5/4, 4 copies, yes—a lot (but there appear to be multiple authors by that name).
For II.5, "78/5604" is not the number of copies held. While this information doesn't seem to be easy to get anymore (it was when I created this assignment), I believe they have 4 or 5 copies.
For III.1, the site is promoting Madonna the singer.
For III.2, I get "Scott Seekins".
For III.3, the owner was Don Parisi, who was sued in WIPO court by the singer. Parisi used that (and whitehouse.com and others) for porno sites.
For III.4, it should show the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.
For IV.1, I doubt that Amazon.com has the lowest price. I bet you didn't notice that the low price you saw was really from some other seller on Amazon Marketplace.
For IV.1, "E-Bay" is not a store, it doesn't sell anything. It is a marketplace where buyers and sellers can get together. You need to know who the seller is and their reputation, not the reputation of the marketplace.
For IV.1, "Fetchbook.info" is not a store, it doesn't sell anything. It is a search engine only, of bookstores. You need to know who the seller is and their reputation, not the reputation of the search engine.
For IV.1, "BookAse.com" is not a store, it doesn't sell anything. It is a search engine that can search online bookstores for you. You need to know who the seller is and their reputation, not the reputation of the search engine.
For IV.1, I doubt that price is for a new copy. You didn't say which store sold it, either.
For IV.1, you didn't say what store had that price.
For IV.1, you didn't say what the price was at that store.
For IV.2, there are many posts on Amazon for "JBL Speakers" the last time I checked. I got this: "JBL Speaker - is an excellent choice" (62 posts on Technorati for "JBL Speakers". Can filter for "bookshelf" or "some authority" to reduce the number of hits.) There are also reviews at Bizrate, Twitter, and elsewhere.
For IV.3, the correct "Louie Louie" chorus is just "Louie Louie, oh no; Me gotta go; Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said; Louie Louie, oh baby; Me gotta go". (Don't just trust the first site you find.)
For IV.4, Clint Eastwood has been in at least 68 movies (but that includes two TV series and several uncredited appearances, so the the exact number depends on how you count them). (Again, don't just trust the first site you find.)
You need to save as a different file "encoding". The default doesn't display correctly in web browsers. Try saving in "UTF-8" encoding instead. -1
==============Images==============
File in Word format, -3.
Used Word Save As Web page, -7 if MHT, -6 if MS web page,
-5 if "filtered", -4 if filtered but manually cleaned up.
No zip archive was used, -4.
You have a double extension on your submission; see the attached file's name, above. -0 This often happens when you have your computer set to "hide" the file extensions. You can fix that by opening any folder, Use the "tools" menu to select "folder options", click on the "view" tab, and un-check where it says "hide extensions for known file types". Then click the "apply to all folders" button.
You should "encode" any names with weird characters (e.g. spaces, quotes) in them. Since we won't be learning that in this course, I suggest next time you rename your image files to simpler names, without spaces in them. -0
There was no need to put the images in a subfolder, that only makes it harder to type the correct URLs for the images. -0
You should have replaced my name and title with your own name, and a descriptive title. -0
You should have included the HTML file in the zip archive, not submit that file separately. -1
Missing image, -2 first, -1 ea addnl. (max = -10 for no images)
Wrong image, but reasonable substitute, -1 each.
Bad image (too small to see, or way to large), -1 ea.
That's not a picture of Maria von Trapp or her business; it is a photo from "The Sound of Music", based on the life of the von Trapp family. -1
You have no IMG tags! You have a link to the images, not the site where the image was found. You were to have an IMG tag for the downloaded images. -7
No HTML (web page) file, -12.
There should only be a single web page (plus 10 images, or 11 files total), -5.
Your web page is missing a few parts, the HEAD section (with the title) and the BODY (and /BODY) and HTML (and /HTML) tags, -3. Please see the sample HTML pages, especially Basic.htm.
It wasn't necessary (or desired) to have one web page per image. Instead a single HTML file that showed all 10 images was required. -2
Incorrect HTML, -2 ea.
Missing descriptions, -1 for the first, -2 if more than one.
Missing links to the site where you found the image, -2 for the first, -4 if more than one. If URLs are included (but not links), -1 for the first and -2 if more than one.
Bad URLs (e.g., to file on home computer), -2 for the first, -4 if more than one.
Instead of referencing the downloaded image files, you used the Internet URLs. You should have just used the filename alone as the URL in the IMG tags. -2
You put "Google" as the source of some of your images. Google is just the search engine. While it does show previews of the images you searched for, you need to click the "visit page" link to find the real website hosting the image. -1
=====Web Site Concept=======
Not an HTML (web page) document! -2 (mht, -1 only)
I think this would be a fine topic.
Your user ID for FTP to the student server is: net100fa
Your password is: 0000000
Let me know if you have any problems using FTP to upload your files to your website. I have added a link on the class index page for you as well.
Nice resume, but what is the topic of your web site going to be? Please re-read the directions, and when you are ready with a real topic, let me know via email and I will reset this so you can submit again.

Internet Beginners Hanging Out in the HCC Lab
For anyone who cares, very new beginners just use well-known on-line journals at first or surf the web. They often fall for phony postings in on-line journals that promote some product or that spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt, while looking for new software or cracked games and applications, or they have passionate arguments on-line for no good reason with people who post inflammatory and usually wrong information. These beginners think they are very sophisticated, the garbage they post makes everything unpleasant, especially when they use all-capital letters. I usually set a filter so I never see their posts again. In my humble opinion, in real life the beginners hang out in the HCC Open lab only to chat on-line. Watching these phonies pretend to have mad skills is so great, I fall off my chair laughing! Ha-Ha!
By the way, just kidding! Don't believe everything you read.
